Burrying a Shipping Container

The straight forward answer to the question - "Can I bury a standard shipping container?" - is NO.
The extended version with a couple considerations is YES. Shipping containers (CONEX, boxes) are NOT structually designed to be burried and require strengthening with ribs particually along the sides. They are also suseptable to corrosion consequently reducing the effective lifespan. This can be minimised with appropiate preporation and waterproofing.

PROS: Simple, ready built structure; Large size; Easily modified; Large access.
CONS: Limited life expectancy; Unable to obtain council approval; Installed at own risk.

Modified shipping containers are available that have been structually enhanced and have added protection against corrosion.

READY TO BURY 20' SHIPPING CONTAINER - $10,000
- Structually enhanced
- Added protection against the elements (cleaned, painted and waterproofed)
- Local delivery
- GST included

Exclusions (and reccommendations)
Excavation - a hole the size of a 20' shipping container either in the side of a hill or directly in the ground
Installation - the included delivey is by tilt tray so unless it can drive into the excavation additional cranage will be required - a crane truck an be arraged for delivery on request
Backfill - crushed stone will reduce the pressure on the container sides and aid drainage - maximum of 300mm of fill above the container and obviously a non-trafficable area
Sump and drainage - considerations need to be given to removal of pooling water based on individual soil type and container arrangement
Ventillation - may be required depending on moisture levels and intended duration of use
Access - if completely burried alternative access to the standard doors may be required
Modification - can be made but are not included
